About Me

I am Kah Yan Loo - most people know me as Jasmine. I am a registered Educational and Developmental psychologist.

I have loved the study of the human mind and behaviour long before I moved to Melbourne to study psychology. Back in those days, not many within my culture and society understood my passion for psychology but it never ceases to fascinate me, how the brain works and how each of us and our stories are so unique.

Eventually I developed a special interest in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the female presentation of ASD. I started working with many on the spectrum and people with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and continue to be blown away by their strengths till this day.

Through therapy sessions, I’ll support you in overcoming your difficulties and celebrate your unique strengths. I don’t think we tend to focus on the latter enough, especially when a person’s in a dark place. I’ll help you recognise your strengths, overcome barriers and build a meaningful life that you value.

As a psychologist, one of the most important things for me is to build a strong therapeutic alliance with my clients, which makes a strong foundation for efficient therapy. Therapy goals are drawn up in collaboration with clients and parents in session. I believe there is no one-size-fits all and adopt a strength-based and eclectic approach in therapy to suit the individual needs of clients I work with.

I work with clients across the lifespan (age 4 and above) and am experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness techniques and Integrative Play Therapy. I adopt an eclectic approach to suit the individual needs of the clients I work with.

I also work in the space of assessment and provide diagnostic assessments (e.g., ASD, ADHD, intellectual disability, etc) and psycho-educational assessments for individuals with learning difficulties to identify clients’ profile of strengths and difficulties.

Another passion of mine is studying languages. I speak 6 of them (English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Malay language and Japanese), even though I only achieved native language level proficiency with the first 4 on the list. Multicultural awareness helps me offer culturally sensitive support to clients from diverse cultures.

Before becoming a psychologist, I worked as an early childhood teacher registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In terms of my interests, I am a Potterhead and fan of many Sanrio and Disney characters. I love travelling and have an appreciation for heritage buildings (the oldest one I’ve stayed at was built in the Dark Ages, more than 500 years ago) because once again, I love anything with a good story and a rich history.
